This protein strawberry milkshake is made with just four simple ingredients, but the result is anything but a thin protein shake. It’s thick, sweet, milky, and packed with intense strawberry flavor, with around 38 g of protein from Greek yogurt and protein powder.

We originally wanted a protein milkshake recipe that actually had the thick, creamy texture we love in a milkshake, because simply mixing strawberry protein powder with milk or water just didn’t give us that. The key for us was finding the right balance of frozen strawberries and milk to create a genuinely thick strawberry protein shake.

Our biggest trick for getting that intense strawberry flavor and thick texture is using frozen strawberries. They replace the ice cream used in traditional milkshakes and the ice cubes often used in fitness shakes, giving us the best of both worlds: plenty of strawberry flavor without all the extra calories. We love this protein shake strawberry version as a summer snack straight from the glass, but it also makes an easy, protein-packed option after a workout.

Why Choose This Protein Strawberry Milkshake Recipe?

Ready in Just 5 Minutes

This protein milkshake recipe couldn’t be easier. We simply add all four ingredients to a blender, blend until smooth, and that’s it. No cooking, no prep, and no complicated steps.

Packed with Protein

With Greek yogurt and vanilla protein powder, this strawberry milkshake packs around 38 g of protein in one serving. We especially like having it after a workout when we want something quick that still feels like a treat. It’s an easy way to upgrade your everyday protein shake.

A Lighter Take on a Classic Milkshake

Compared with typical fast-food milkshakes, our homemade protein shake is much lower in fat and contains no added sugar in the basic recipe. We still get the sweet, creamy milkshake experience, but with a simpler ingredient list.

Ingredients for This Strawberry Protein Shake

Here you can see the ingredients for this protein strawberry milkshake. See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients with all quantities.

Ingredients Explained

  • Frozen Strawberries: make sure to use frozen strawberries for this recipe. They are essential for getting that thick, cold milkshake texture. Fresh strawberries won’t give you the same consistency.

  • Whole Milk: gives the shake that classic milkshake base. We keep the amount relatively low so the final texture stays thick instead of turning watery.

  • Plain Greek Yogurt: adds extra creaminess and protein. We use Greek yogurt with 0.2% fat for this recipe.

  • Vanilla Protein Powder: provides a big part of the protein, adds extra sweetness, and gives the shake a subtle vanilla flavor that works really well with the strawberries.

Substitutions & Variations for This Recipe

You can easily customize this protein strawberry milkshake recipe to match your own taste.

  • Cottage Cheese Instead of Greek Yogurt: use cottage cheese as a 1:1 substitute for Greek yogurt. If you want to make sure there are no cottage cheese lumps in your milkshake, blend the cottage cheese first, then add the remaining ingredients.

  • Different Milk: low-fat milk, almond milk, oat milk, or other milk varieties can be used as a 1:1 substitute.

  • Without Protein Powder: add 1–2 tsp of honey, maple syrup, or sweetener, plus ½ tsp of vanilla extract. This keeps the shake sweet and vanilla-flavored, but it won’t have the same protein content.

  • Chocolate Strawberry Shake: add 1 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa powder for a chocolatey twist. Chocolate and strawberries work really well together. You may want to add 1–2 tsp of honey, maple syrup, or sweetener, as the cocoa can reduce the sweetness.

  • Strawberry Banana Shake: add about ½ a frozen banana and slightly reduce the amount of strawberries. This makes the shake noticeably creamier and sweeter.

  • Peanut Butter Strawberry Shake: add 1 tbsp of peanut butter or powdered peanut butter and leave the rest of the recipe unchanged.

Any changes to the ingredients may affect the macronutrient values. If you modify the recipe, the nutritional values should be recalculated accordingly.

How to Make This Protein Milkshake

Images 1–2: Blend the Ingredients

Add the frozen strawberries, whole milk, Greek yogurt, and vanilla protein powder to a high-speed blender. Blend on high until everything is smooth and creamy, with no strawberry pieces left. Depending on your blender, this can take a little while since the frozen fruit makes the shake really thick. If needed, scrape down the sides and give it another blend.

Images 3–4: Pour and Serve

Pour the thick strawberry protein shake into a glass and top it with light whipped cream and fresh strawberries if you’re in the mood for a little extra. Serve it right away while it’s nice and cold. The longer it sits, the more the shake will start to soften.

JuicyMacros Recipe Tip

  • Stop Blending Once It’s Smooth: once all the strawberry pieces are gone and the shake looks smooth, we turn off the blender. There’s really no reason to keep blending after that. The blender can warm up the shake, which can make it lose some of that thick, creamy texture we’re going for.

Can You Make This Ahead?

We do not recommend storing or freezing this strawberry protein shake. For the absolute best texture, enjoy it straight out of the blender. This is when it’s at its absolute thickest, creamiest, and most delicious!

Recipe FAQs

How can I make a strawberry protein shake without a thin texture?

If you want a thicker strawberry protein shake, the key is not adding too much liquid. We use frozen strawberries and just enough milk to blend everything smoothly. This gives the shake a much thicker, more milkshake-like texture than simply mixing protein powder with a lot of milk or water.

Can I use fresh strawberries instead of frozen?

For this recipe, we recommend using frozen strawberries. They’re what gives the strawberry protein shake its thick, cold texture, so fresh strawberries won’t give you quite the same result.

Can I make this protein milkshake without protein powder?

Yes! If you want to make this protein milkshake without protein powder, add 1–2 tsp of honey, maple syrup, or sweetener along with ½ tsp of vanilla extract. This keeps the shake sweet and adds back some of the vanilla flavor, but the protein content will change without the protein powder.
