Why Choose This Recipe?

High-Protein Comfort Food

We’re talking over 70g of protein per serving here. This loaded sweet potato fries recipe tastes like something you’d order at a diner, but the macros are actually working in your favor instead of against you.

Variety & Texture

Crispy sweet potato fries, juicy BBQ chicken, melted cheese, and cool honey mustard sauce — every bite has something different going on. It’s also super customizable, so you can swap toppings based on what you’re craving.

Air Fryer & Oven Friendly

Got an air fryer? Use it for extra-crispy results. Prefer the oven? That works just as well. We built this recipe to be flexible, so it fits whatever equipment you’ve already got in your kitchen, no special gear required.

Great for Leftover Chicken

Got cooked chicken breast sitting in the fridge? This is the easiest way to turn it into something exciting again. It’s basically a second life for leftovers, minus the boring reheated taste.

What You Need for These Loaded Sweet Potato Fries

All ingredients for Loaded Sweet Potato Fries

Here you can see the ingredients for these loaded sweet potato fries. See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients with all quantities.

Ingredients Explained

  • Sweet Potatoes: the base of the whole dish. They’re naturally sweet and get nice and crispy around the edges when cooked.

  • Cooked Shredded Chicken Breast: our main protein source. We shred it instead of dicing for a reason — the strands soak up the BBQ sauce so much better than cubes do.

  • BBQ Sauce: brings that smoky, sweet flavor and helps create the sticky, loaded fries effect we’re going for.

  • Cheese: melts right over the chicken and ties the whole thing together.

  • Skyr or Greek Yogurt: our trick for making the honey mustard sauce creamy without piling on extra fat.

  • Honey & Mustard: adds a sweet, tangy contrast that balances out the smoky BBQ sauce.

  • JalapeƱos: they give a fresh heat to the dish.

Recipe Variations

You can easily customize these loaded sweet potato fries recipe to match your own taste.

  • Rotisserie chicken instead of cooked chicken breast: no cooked chicken on hand? Rotisserie chicken is our go-to shortcut. It shreds easily, packs in plenty of flavor, and cuts down on prep time.

  • Turkey breast instead of chicken breast: turkey breast is a solid swap here too. It’s lean, protein-rich, and soaks up the BBQ sauce and seasonings just as well as chicken does.

  • Regular potatoes instead of sweet potatoes: not a sweet potato fan? Regular potatoes do the job too. You’ll get slightly crispier, less sweet fries, but the loaded fries experience stays fully intact.

  • Frozen sweet potato fries for convenience: short on time? Frozen sweet potato fries are a totally fine shortcut. Just look for a brand made with simple ingredients and minimal added oil, and stick to the air fryer or oven instead of deep frying to keep things close to the original macros.

  • Cheese options: cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, or a Mexican blend all melt beautifully here. They each bring something a little different, so go with whatever’s already in your fridge.

  • Buffalo sauce instead of BBQ sauce: craving something spicier? Swap the BBQ sauce for buffalo sauce.

  • Add red or green onions: a handful of sliced red or green onions adds freshness and crunch, and helps cut through the richness of the cheese and sauce.

  • Skip the jalapeƱos: want something milder and more family-friendly? Just leave the jalapeƱos out. There’s still plenty going on between the BBQ chicken, cheese, and honey mustard sauce.

Any changes to the ingredients may affect the macronutrient values. If you modify the recipe, the nutritional values should be recalculated accordingly.

How to Make These Loaded Sweet Potato Fries

Cut sweet potatoes into fries shape. Putting olive oil and salt to the sweet potatoes. Then layering the sweet potato fries in an air fryer basket and baking them.

Steps 1–4: Prepare & Bake the Fries

We start by cutting the sweet potatoes into evenly sized fries, then toss them with oil and salt. Spread them out in a single layer so they cook evenly. For the crispiest sweet potato fries, we love using the air fryer, but if you’re making a bigger batch, baked sweet potato fries in the oven work just as well.

Shredding the cooked chicken breast with two forks. Then seasoning the shredded chicken with spices and BBQ sauce in a skillet.

Steps 5–8: Prepare the BBQ Chicken

While the fries cook, we shred the chicken if it isn’t already, then combine it with BBQ sauce and seasonings in a skillet. Stir frequently so the sauce coats every piece evenly, and add a splash of water if things get too thick. Cook until the chicken is slightly sticky.

Whisking the honey mustard sauce ingredients in a glass bowl.

Steps 9–10: Mix the Honey Mustard Sauce

This part’s quick: whisk everything together until smooth. We’re going for a sauce that’s pourable, not gloopy, so it drizzles easily over the fries later.

Assembling the baked sweet potato fries in a grey bowl with the BBQ pulled chicken and topping it with melted cheese, honey mustard sauce and sliced pickled jalapeƱos.

Steps 11–14: Assemble the Loaded Fries

Now for the fun part. Layer the crispy fries on an oven-safe plate or tray, pile on the BBQ chicken, and top it all with cheese. Pop it in the oven just long enough to melt the cheese, then finish with the honey mustard sauce and jalapeƱos. Serve immediately while the fries are still crispy.

JuicyMacros Recipe Tip

  • Thin fries crisp up best: cut your potatoes into thin fries, these get noticeably crispier than thick-cut fries.

How to Store These Loaded Sweet Potato Fries

  • Refrigerator

  • We recommend storing the sweet potato fries, BBQ chicken, and honey mustard sauce separately in airtight containers, this keeps the texture best.

  • Everything stays fresh for up to 4 days.

  • Freezer

  • The BBQ chicken freezes really well, up to 3 months.

  • We don’t recommend freezing the sweet potato fries though, they tend to lose their crispiness once thawed.

  • Reheating

  • Pop the fries in the air fryer or oven at 200°C (390°F) for 3–5 minutes until they’re warmed through and crispy again.

  • Warm the BBQ chicken separately in a skillet or the microwave.

  • Assemble everything with the sauce and toppings right before serving, so it tastes just as good as fresh.

Directions

  • Prepare the Sweet Potato Fries

    – Oven (fan): 210°C for 25–30 min, turning halfway.
  • Make the BBQ Chicken

    – Freezer: the BBQ chicken can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating. Freezing the fries is not recommended.
  • Reheating:
    – Reheat the fries in an air fryer or oven at 200°C (390°F) for 3–5 minutes. Warm the chicken separately in a skillet or microwave, then assemble with fresh sauce and toppings before serving.

Recipe FAQs

Are sweet potato fries better in the air fryer or oven?

Honestly, it depends on what you need. The air fryer usually gives you crispier results, since the hot air circulates right around each fry. If you’re cooking a bigger batch though, the oven is the way to go, you just might sacrifice a little crispiness for the extra space.

How do you keep loaded sweet potato fries crispy?

The trick is cooking the fries in a single layer so they get even airflow, and adding all your toppings right before serving. If the fries sit too long under the chicken and sauce, they’ll start to soften.

Can I make this loaded sweet potato fries recipe ahead of time?

Yep, totally doable. We like prepping the BBQ chicken and honey mustard sauce in advance and storing them in the fridge, then cooking the fries fresh when we’re ready to eat. That way you still get that perfectly crispy texture.

What cheese works best for loaded sweet potato fries?

Cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, and Pepper Jack are all great options here, they melt nicely and pair really well with the smoky BBQ chicken flavor.
